Christmas is fast approaching. That's certainly no news flash. It's hard not to notice the signs of the season everywhere, from the twinkling lights to the store signs adorned with "Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays!"
Already, some radio stations are playing nonstop Christmas music. C'mon, surely they can hold off until at least the end of November?
Greetings and well-wishes flow in the air, accompanied (most of the time!) by a warm smile, although the clerk in the mall - her feet throbbing from standing at the cash register for hours and her patience exhausted by the thousands of customers she's helped already that day - says it with a strained smile.
The festive season is so contagious that even old bah-humbug Scrooge finally surrendered, conquering his penny-pinching ways. Whether you love it or loathe it, Christmas is on its way. Is there a special guy in your life? No idea what to get him this festive season? Buying Christmas gifts for him is a walk in the park, ladies - so long as you steer clear of the below items...
A Britney Spears Greatest Hits CD
You might want to think twice about saying: "Britney Spears sang ... Baby One More Time!" Sure, Britney might have sold over 100 million records worldwide. And you may suppose she's a gift from God, and that her voice sounds like an angel. But the pop princess's music just isn't the kind you'd find on a guy's iPod. If you do, however, stumble across a Britney Spears track on in his playlist, then (oops!) you better start asking questions. A Britney Spears CD = a cringe-worthy - and I repeat - cringe-worthy Christmas present for him.
Paintings and poems
Men and poems/paintings - rarely do they mix. Unless he's Shakespeare, Picasso or one of those arty/poetic types, then these gifts for him for Christmas are a big no-no. They're way too corny for the regular kind of guy. Plus, most men aren't exactly what you'd call emotional (well, for the most part anyway). What's more, seldom do they enjoy deciphering hidden meanings. It's more likely he'll take your "beautiful painting or poem" and turn it into a work surface for the project he's working on in his garage. Lesson of the day: paintings/poems do not make good gifts for him at Christmas.
Pink sweaters
Let's get one thing straight. No guy, unless he's a bit camp, would ever wear a pink sweater. Sure, this style may have been oh-so fashionable for students in the eighties, but not today. All you'll get is a forced smile. And most probably see the sweater in all its pink glory hanging in a charity shop the next day.
Work Tools
Where's the excitement and imagination in giving him a power drill, saw, iron, vacuum cleaner or garden rake? Do yourself (and him!) a favor by not frightening him this festive season with any of these items. Sure, he might not be the world's greatest domestic god or backyard handyman, but these Xmas gifts for him just suggest you haven't really thought much about what he actually likes. Plus, if he needed a screw driver, leaf blower, etcetera, he'd go out and buy it himself.
Flowers
Poppies, roses, daisies, lilies, tulips... Do you want to scare away your guy big-time? Then put pansies, sunflowers, roses, and the rest, at the top of your list!What guy would honestly be thrilled with a bouquet of blooms? He probably doesn't - bless his cottons - even know what a vase is. All he'll do is put the flowers in some sort of jug-like thing and leave them there to die. Men and flowers are just not compatible. So don't punish him with something he can barely comprehend.
Video Games
Video games make awesome Christmas presents for him up until he gets addicted and ends up spending less time with you... your call.
